Wild Horses Doomed To Slaughter
Wild Horse Annie's dream of protecting America's free horses will soon be destroyed because of an eleventh-hour amendment slipped into the Federal Appropriations bill by Senator Conrad Burns (R ? Montana). Senator Burns added an amendment that removes all protection for wild horses over the age of ten or that failed to be adopted after three attempts. The efforts of Wild Horse Annie led to the passing of The Wild and Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act in 1971 and offered protection against their wholesale slaughter.
Under the amendment offered by Senator Burns, older horses and burros and those deemed unadoptable will be sold at auction without any protection against being sent to slaughter at one of the three foreign owned equine slaughterhouses now operating in the United States. American horsemeat is sold in France, Italy, Belgium and Japan, where it is considered a delicacy.
The Federal Appropriations bill will be sent to the President to be signed into law within the first two weeks of December. It is currently being held back because of a dispute over another eleventh-hour amendment concerning the power of the IRS."No one knew about this until it was found Monday evening," said Jerry Finch, head of Habitat for Horses, a nonprofit horse rescue in Texas. "This amendment means death by slaughter for tens of thousands of our wild horses, and a lot of profit for those who kill and transport them overseas." "If a special session is necessary to stop this slaughter by pulling the amendment, it needs to be done immediately," Finch added. Thousands of wild horse advocates are asking that the Appropriations bill not be signed until the amendment is withdrawn. "It's a sad reflection on our government process to know that one man can, by himself, order the death of so many horses," said Finch.
Advocates are asking that those who support America's wild horses and burros contact President Bush and ask him not to sign the Appropriations bill until Burn's amendment is removed and to contact their Federal Representatives to ask for their help. The Appropriations bill might be signed by December 6th.Habitat for Horses, Inc. is a nonprofit equine rescue and education center located in Hitchcock, Texas. Short Skirts are in: Are Your Legs Ready?
There is a saying that as hemlines rise so does the stock market.
If that is truly the case then we are in a great position to cash in on the market, as skirts are indeed getting shorter this season.
While for men this may be a cause of celebration, for many women this news is a reason for some concern.
Shorter skirts mean that more of the leg is visible.
And while we women are seldom satisfied with our bodies, more women voice dissatisfaction with their legs than any other part of the body.
Varicose veins and spider veins are two problems that can plague our legs as we get older.
Over 50% of women and 40% of men over the age of 50 complain of vein problems.
The legs are susceptible to these vein problems because they work very hard pumping oxygen-poor blood back up to the heart while the arteries pump blood rich in oxygen from the heart to other parts of the body.
Without getting too technical,...

The Price of Ambition--How Much Fun You Can Have
I am sore tonight! This soreness is all because of ambition! We decided that we wanted horses. You know, a horse farm, in the country, with rolling fields of deep green grass; a handsome barn, full of sweet smelling hay and shavings for the stalls. The barn would have a separate room for the well-oiled and well-worn saddles and tack so we could throw the saddle on and go for a ride whenever we desired.Of course, we would also probably need a round pen to exercise and train, and maybe a lunging pen when needed. The lake on the farm would be clear and deep, full of fish, with a nice stream flowing away down to keep the bubbling creek running.OK, so we got what we wanted. Only it isn't quite like the dream.
For starters, the field is a little overgrown with pine scrub, and weeds that have grown into trees with thorns! I don't remember ever seeing briars an inch thick before!Somehow the rain runoff has managed to create these red clay gulleys in the fields that have to be filled in...
